10-Day Tanzania Safari: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire & Lake Manyara

The drive to Arusha takes about 45 minutes, passing coffee plantations and, on clear days, offering your first glimpse of Mount Meru. Settle into your lodge and meet your safari guide for a briefing over dinner.

After breakfast, drive southwest toward Tarangire National Park, entering through the main gate by late morning. The park is immediately striking: massive baobab trees, some over a thousand years old, dot the landscape while elephant herds numbering 200 or more gather along the Tarangire River. Enjoy an extended afternoon game drive through the Silale Swamp area and along the riverbed.

A full day in Tarangire lets you explore the southern reaches of the park, where fewer vehicles venture and the wildlife viewing is often more intimate. The Kitibong Hill area is a reliable spot for lion prides, while the Lemiyon area attracts large herds of buffalo. During dry season, the river becomes a lifeline, drawing predators and prey into close quarters along its shrinking pools.

Drive north to Lake Manyara, a compact but remarkably diverse park squeezed between the Rift Valley escarpment and the alkaline lake. The groundwater forest near the entrance is home to troops of baboons and blue monkeys. The open floodplains beyond often reveal Lake Manyara's famous tree-climbing lions draped across the branches of mahogany trees. This is the day the trip shifts gears. Drive west across the Ngorongoro highlands and descend into the Serengeti through the Naabi Hill Gate, where the plains open up to the horizon in every direction. This is often the highlight of the entire trip. Descend 600 meters into the crater shortly after dawn, when mist still clings to the walls and the light on the crater floor is magical. The density of wildlife is extraordinary: black rhinos graze in the open (one of the best places in East Africa to spot them), lion prides sprawl across the grasslands, and flamingos paint the shallow Lake Magadi pink. You will have approximately six hours on the crater floor before ascending in the afternoon.

After breakfast on the crater rim, drive back to Arusha through the agricultural heartland of Karatu, passing Maasai herders and patchwork farms along the escarpment. Depending on your flight time, there may be an opportunity to stop at a Maasai market in Mto wa Mbu or visit a coffee plantation.
