10-Day Tanzania Safari: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire & Lake Manyara

Tanzania holds some of the most celebrated wildlife spectacles on the planet, and this 10-day itinerary hits every one of them. You will start in the ancient baobab woodlands of Tarangire, where elephant herds gather in numbers rivaled by few places on Earth, then move to the tree-climbing lions and flamingo-fringed shores of Lake Manyara. The journey builds toward the Serengeti, where two full days give you time to chase river crossings during the Great Migration or simply soak in the endless savanna teeming with predators and prey. The crescendo is Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera sheltering one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Rhinos, lions, hippos, and flamingos all share this natural amphitheater. Between parks, the route passes through Maasai villages, coffee plantations, and the dusty market towns of northern Tanzania. This is not a rushed checklist safari. Each park gets enough time to settle in, learn the rhythms of the bush, and actually watch animal behavior unfold. The pacing suits first-timers and repeat visitors alike, with mid-range lodges that balance comfort and authentic bush atmosphere. If Tanzania has been on your list, this is the trip that does it justice.

This is often the highlight of the entire trip. Descend 600 meters into the crater shortly after dawn, when mist still clings to the walls and the light on the crater floor is magical. The density of wildlife is extraordinary: black rhinos graze in the open (one of the best places in East Africa to spot them), lion prides sprawl across the grasslands, and flamingos paint the shallow Lake Magadi pink. You will have approximately six hours on the crater floor before ascending in the afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see the river crossings in the Serengeti?

The Grumeti River crossings typically happen in June and July as the herds move north. The Mara River crossings occur from July through October. However, migration timing shifts each year depending on rainfall, so exact dates are unpredictable. Your guide will track the herds using local intelligence to maximize your chances.

How cold does it get at Ngorongoro Crater?

The crater rim sits at about 2,235 meters elevation. Nighttime temperatures can drop to 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, and mornings are often misty and chilly. Bring a warm fleece or jacket. The crater floor is warmer, but early morning descents can be cold in the open vehicle.

Is this itinerary suitable for children?

Yes, children aged 6 and older generally enjoy this safari. The game drives are not excessively long, and the lodges are comfortable with family rooms available. Younger children may struggle with the longer driving days between parks. Some lodges offer kid-friendly activities during downtime.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for Tanzania?

Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic country. If you are flying directly from a non-endemic country, it is not technically required, but many travelers get it as a precaution. Consult your travel clinic at least six weeks before departure.

What is the road quality between parks?

The main roads between Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro are tarmac and in reasonable condition. Roads within the parks and the route into the Serengeti are unpaved and can be bumpy, especially after rain. All game drives are in sturdy 4x4 Land Cruisers designed for these conditions.

How much should I budget for tips?

A common guideline is $15 to $20 per person per day for your safari guide, and $5 to $10 per person per day for lodge staff (usually placed in a communal tip box). For a 10-day trip, budgeting $200 to $300 per person for tips is reasonable.
