Malindi

Little Italy of Kenya

Laid-back, Italian-influenced, historic: a beach town with stories to tell

Malindi is Kenya's original beach town, where Arab traders established a port over a thousand years ago and Vasco da Gama landed in 1498. Today, this historic seaside town attracts a mix of Italian expats, Kenyan holidaymakers, and travelers seeking beaches, marine life, and authentic Swahili culture. The nearby Watamu Marine National Park offers some of East Africa's best snorkeling and diving, while the mysterious Gedi Ruins reveal an abandoned medieval Swahili city swallowed by forest. Malindi has rougher edges than resort-style Diani, but rewards visitors with history, character, and some of Kenya's finest seafood. The strong Italian influence gives the town an unexpected Mediterranean flair.
