Kenya Weather by Month

January is one of Kenya's best months for safari, with warm, dry conditions across the parks. Wildlife congregates around remaining water sources, making game viewing outstanding. Clear skies and golden light create ideal conditions for photography.

February continues the dry season with even warmer temperatures than January. The Masai Mara grasslands are short and dry, offering superb visibility for spotting predators on the hunt. Coastal resorts enjoy perfect beach weather with calm, warm seas.

March marks the onset of Kenya's long rains, with afternoon showers becoming increasingly common. The landscape transforms into lush greenery, and migratory birds begin arriving. Safari is still possible, especially in the mornings, though some dirt roads may become challenging.

April is the wettest month in Kenya, with heavy, persistent rains across most of the country. Many safari camps and lodges close during this period, and dirt roads in parks can become impassable. This is the least popular month for tourism, but prices are at their lowest.

May brings the tail end of the long rains, though showers begin to ease toward the end of the month. The countryside is spectacularly green and waterfalls are at their most impressive. Some camps begin reopening in late May as conditions improve.

June signals the start of Kenya's long dry season, with rains tapering off quickly. The Masai Mara begins its transformation as grasses dry and wildlife becomes easier to spot. Temperatures are pleasantly cool, especially in the highlands, making for comfortable safari days.

July is one of Kenya's most thrilling months as the Great Migration arrives in the Masai Mara. Massive herds of wildebeest and zebra begin crossing from Tanzania, attracting predators and creating unforgettable spectacles. The dry, cool weather is ideal for extended game drives.

August is peak Great Migration season in the Masai Mara, with dramatic river crossings at the Mara River drawing visitors from around the world. Huge crocodiles, powerful currents, and waiting predators create some of nature's most dramatic moments. This is Kenya's busiest and most sought-after safari month.

September offers superb safari conditions with the Great Migration still in the Masai Mara and warming temperatures. River crossings continue, and the plains are teeming with wildlife. Slightly fewer crowds than August make this an excellent time for a more relaxed migration experience.

October marks the final stretch of the Great Migration in Kenya before the herds begin their journey south. Occasional light showers signal the approaching short rains, turning the landscape greener. Wildlife viewing remains excellent, and the coast heats up for beach holidays.

November brings the short rains to Kenya, with afternoon thunderstorms refreshing the landscape. The rains are less intense than the long rains of April and May, and safari is still very much possible between showers. Newborn animals start appearing across the reserves, and migrant birds arrive in large numbers.

December sees the short rains easing off, especially in the second half of the month, and holiday visitors begin arriving for the festive season. The parks are beautifully green, and wildlife is plentiful with many young animals visible. Coastal towns like Diani and Watamu come alive with holiday energy.
