Namibia Weather by Month

January is peak summer in Namibia, with intense heat across the interior and afternoon thunderstorms bringing brief but dramatic rainfall to the north. Sossusvlei remains accessible and the red dunes glow brilliantly in the summer light. Etosha's waterholes are full, so wildlife disperses across the park, making sightings less predictable.

February continues the wet season in northern Namibia, with lush green landscapes replacing the usual dry terrain. This is an excellent month for birding, as migratory species arrive in large numbers. The Caprivi Strip is particularly verdant, though some roads may become impassable after heavy rains.

March marks the transition from wet to dry season, with rainfall tapering off toward month's end. The landscape is still green and photogenic, offering a rare contrast to Namibia's typical desert palette. Wildlife viewing improves as water sources begin to shrink and animals start congregating.

April brings cooler temperatures and the last of the rains, making it a pleasant month for travel. The bush remains green, creating beautiful scenery, while game viewing steadily improves. This shoulder season offers excellent value with fewer tourists and lower lodge rates across the country.

May kicks off Namibia's prime dry season with clear skies, comfortable daytime temperatures, and cold nights. Wildlife begins concentrating around permanent water sources in Etosha, and the dry air provides exceptional visibility for photography. This is one of the best months to visit, with pleasant conditions across the country.

June is peak winter in Namibia, with bone-dry conditions and cool, crisp weather. Etosha's waterholes become magnets for wildlife, offering some of the continent's best game viewing. Nights can be bitterly cold in the desert, sometimes dropping near freezing, but days are sunny and ideal for outdoor exploration.

July is the coldest month and one of the most popular for tourism in Namibia. Absolutely no rainfall, crystal-clear skies, and excellent wildlife viewing make it a top choice for safari enthusiasts. The Namib Desert temperatures are comfortable during the day, though early morning game drives require serious layering against the chill.

August remains firmly in peak season, with dry conditions and warming temperatures drawing large concentrations of wildlife to waterholes. Etosha is at its finest, with elephants, lions, and rare black rhinos regularly spotted. The Namibian coast stays cool and foggy, offering a refreshing contrast to the desert interior.

September brings warming days while maintaining the dry season's prime wildlife viewing conditions. Temperatures climb but remain very comfortable, and the sparse vegetation makes it easy to spot animals at Etosha's waterholes. Wildflowers begin to bloom in Namaqualand near the southern border, adding splashes of color to the arid landscape.

October is one of the hottest months, with temperatures soaring above 35 degrees Celsius in the interior. Wildlife viewing remains excellent as animals cluster desperately around the last remaining water sources. The first tentative rains may arrive late in the month, and the landscape takes on a stark, dramatic beauty.

November signals the start of the wet season with building heat and sporadic thunderstorms, especially in the north. The first rains transform the parched earth, and migrant birds begin arriving. Safari conditions decline as wildlife disperses from waterholes, but Sossusvlei and the coastal towns remain rewarding destinations.

December is hot and increasingly wet, particularly in the northern regions around Etosha and the Caprivi Strip. The holiday season brings a surge of South African visitors, so popular spots can feel busy despite it being the wet season. The desert landscape greens up dramatically, and dramatic thunderstorm skies create extraordinary photographic opportunities.
