Musanze

Gateway to the Gorillas

Relaxed, highland, volcanic, purposeful

Musanze is the gateway to gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, a pleasant highland town of around 100,000 people nestled in a valley between the Virunga volcanoes. Formerly known as Ruhengeri, it sits at 1,850 meters elevation just 15 minutes from the Kinigi park headquarters where all gorilla treks begin. Most visitors to Volcanoes NP base themselves here, either in town or at one of the lodges scattered along the road to the park. Musanze has a relaxed, low-key atmosphere with stunning volcano views on clear days: the peaks of Karisimbi, Bisoke, and Sabyinyo loom above the town. Beyond being a base camp for gorillas, Musanze has a few attractions of its own. The Musanze Caves are an extensive lava tube system formed by ancient volcanic activity, and the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo offer scenic kayaking and hiking. The town has good restaurants, a lively market, and an increasingly diverse selection of accommodation from luxury lodges to backpacker hostels. The two-hour drive from Kigali on a smooth tarmac road passes through terraced hillsides and farming villages, giving travelers a beautiful introduction to Rwanda's landscape before reaching gorilla country.
