Tanzania Weather by Month

January is a spectacular time to visit Tanzania, as the Great Migration herds gather on the southern Serengeti plains for calving season. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth over just a few weeks, attracting predators in large numbers. The weather is warm with occasional short showers that keep the plains green and lush.

February is the peak of the calving season in the Serengeti, with up to 8,000 wildebeest calves born each day. Predators, including lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, are highly active, creating extraordinary wildlife drama. Zanzibar's beaches are sunny and warm, perfect for a post-safari retreat.

March marks the beginning of the long rains in Tanzania, though the first half of the month can still offer good safari conditions. The Great Migration herds start moving northwest from the Serengeti's southern plains. This shoulder season brings lower prices and fewer crowds for those willing to brave occasional downpours.

April is Tanzania's wettest month, with heavy rains making many park roads difficult to navigate. Several lodges and camps close during this period, particularly in the southern Serengeti and Selous. June heralds the start of Tanzania's prime dry season. The rains have ended, skies are clear, and the bush begins to thin out, making wildlife far easier to spot. The Great Migration herds push through the western Serengeti corridor, with dramatic Grumeti River crossings. Temperatures are pleasantly cool.

July is one of Tanzania's finest safari months. The Great Migration herds mass in the northern Serengeti, preparing for the dramatic Mara River crossings into Kenya. Dry conditions across all parks mean outstanding game viewing, with animals concentrated at rivers and waterholes. Cool, pleasant temperatures make for comfortable days in the bush.

August continues peak dry season conditions with exceptional game viewing throughout Tanzania. The northern Serengeti comes alive with river crossings as wildebeest attempt the treacherous Mara River. Tarangire National Park is outstanding this month, with huge elephant herds gathering along the Tarangire River.

September offers superb safari conditions as the dry season reaches its peak. Vegetation is at its thinnest, water sources are scarce, and wildlife concentrates in predictable areas, making sightings almost guaranteed. The Great Migration herds split between northern Tanzania and Kenya's Masai Mara.

October is the last month of the dry season, with temperatures rising before the short rains arrive. Wildlife viewing remains very good, and the migration herds begin their return journey south toward the Serengeti. The combination of excellent game viewing and slightly lower prices makes October a smart choice for savvy travelers.

November brings the short rains to Tanzania, with afternoon showers that are generally brief but can be heavy. The Serengeti turns green as the migration herds race southward, drawn by the fresh grasses. Visitor numbers drop significantly, and lodges offer attractive shoulder-season rates.

December sees the short rains easing as the festive season draws visitors back to Tanzania. The migration herds arrive on the southern Serengeti plains, setting the stage for the upcoming calving season. Zanzibar buzzes with holiday energy, and the warm, increasingly sunny weather is ideal for combining safari and beach.
