Entebbe

Airport City

Relaxed, green, lakeside, colonial charm

Entebbe is Uganda's airport city and a surprisingly pleasant lakeside town that most travelers see only in transit. Located on a peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria, 40 km south of Kampala, Entebbe offers a completely different pace from the capital's chaos. Tree-lined avenues, beautiful botanical gardens, a wildlife education center (zoo), and gentle lakeside breezes make it worth a night or two, especially before or after a long safari. The town is also historically significant: it served as the colonial capital and was the site of the famous 1976 Israeli hostage rescue at the airport. Many travelers now choose to base themselves in Entebbe rather than Kampala, enjoying the calm atmosphere while still having easy access to safari departure points.
