Fort Portal is a clean, leafy town in western Uganda that serves as the gateway to three of the country's most important national parks: Kibale Forest (chimps), Queen Elizabeth (savanna safari), and the Rwenzori Mountains (trekking). Sitting at 1,540 meters on the eastern foothills of the Rwenzoris, the town enjoys a pleasant, cool climate and is surrounded by some of Uganda's most beautiful scenery: volcanic crater lakes, tea plantations, and tropical forests. Fort Portal itself is well-organized by Ugandan standards, with good restaurants, a lively market, and a growing number of tourism-focused businesses. The nearby crater lakes region offers stunning hiking, community tourism, and a chance to see rural Uganda at its most beautiful.
