Adventure Capital of East Africa

Adventurous, laid-back, riverside, backpacker-friendly

Jinja is Uganda's adventure capital, a charming riverside town where the White Nile begins its 6,695-kilometer journey to the Mediterranean Sea. Sitting at the point where Lake Victoria spills into the River Nile, Jinja has become East Africa's top destination for white-water rafting, bungee jumping, kayaking, and other adrenaline activities. The source of the Nile itself is a peaceful boat ride from town, marked by a monument at the spot where the river first emerges from the lake. Beyond the adventure scene, Jinja is a pleasant small town with colonial-era architecture, a lively Indian heritage, and a growing cafe and restaurant scene. It makes an excellent 1-2 day detour from Kampala (just 2 hours east) before heading to Uganda's safari parks.
