Uganda Weather by Month

January falls within Uganda's first dry season, offering warm days and relatively low rainfall across most regions. This is one of the best months for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, as trails are drier and more manageable. The savanna parks like Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls also offer superb wildlife viewing.

February continues the dry season with warm, pleasant conditions ideal for wildlife experiences across Uganda. Gorilla permits are in high demand, so booking well in advance is essential. The Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park teems with hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds.

March marks the onset of Uganda's long rainy season, with increasing downpours especially in the afternoon and evening. Gorilla trekking is still possible but trails in Bwindi become muddy and slippery, requiring good fitness. The rains bring lush greenery and excellent birdwatching, with migratory species arriving in force.

April is typically the wettest month in Uganda, with heavy, persistent rains that can disrupt travel plans and make park roads challenging. Some remote areas may become inaccessible, and gorilla trekking trails in Bwindi are at their muddiest. However, this is the cheapest time to visit, and dedicated travelers will find quiet forests and incredible birdlife.

May sees the long rains beginning to ease, though showers remain frequent, particularly in western Uganda and around Lake Victoria. Wildlife viewing in the savanna parks improves toward the end of the month as roads dry out. The forests remain exceptionally green and alive with bird activity.

June marks the start of Uganda's second dry season, with rapidly improving conditions across the country. The forests are still lush from recent rains, and gorilla trekking conditions become much more enjoyable. Savanna parks offer increasingly good wildlife viewing as vegetation dries and animals gather at water sources.

July is one of Uganda's best months for wildlife and gorilla trekking, with dry conditions and comfortable temperatures throughout the country. The Bwindi forests are at their most accessible, and the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park offers excellent chances to spot tree-climbing lions. Murchison Falls is spectacular with strong water flow from recent rains.

August continues the dry season with warm, sunny days and cool highland mornings, making it ideal for both gorilla trekking and savanna safaris. This is peak tourist season, so gorilla permits and lodge bookings should be secured months in advance. The Nile at Jinja offers thrilling white-water rafting in excellent conditions.

September is a transitional month as the short rains begin to arrive, usually starting in the latter half. Early September still offers good dry-season conditions, while later in the month showers become more frequent. Wildlife viewing remains strong in the savanna parks, and gorilla trekking is still very rewarding.

October falls within the short rainy season, bringing regular afternoon and evening showers across Uganda. Trails can be muddy, but mornings are often clear and pleasant for activities. This is a quieter period with fewer tourists, meaning a more intimate experience with gorilla families and in the national parks.

November is the second wettest month, with frequent and sometimes heavy rainfall, particularly around Lake Victoria and in the western highlands. Despite the rain, Uganda's equatorial climate means showers are usually short-lived, and sunshine breaks through regularly. Birdwatching is exceptional as migratory species swell the already impressive resident populations.

December marks the return of drier conditions as the short rains taper off, making it a popular month for holiday travelers seeking gorilla trekking and safari adventures. The landscape is gloriously green, and the forests are full of life. Booking well ahead is advisable, as this festive period attracts visitors from around the world.
