January is the wettest month in Zambia, with heavy, persistent rains flooding the plains and making many bush roads impassable. Most safari camps in South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi close for the season. Victoria Falls is building toward its peak flow, and the lush green landscape is ideal for birding enthusiasts willing to brave the humidity.

February remains firmly in the wet season, with continued heavy rainfall and high humidity across the country. Roads into remote safari areas are frequently washed out, and most bush camps remain closed. However, the Bangweulu Wetlands come alive with massive flocks of shoebill storks, making this a special month for dedicated birders.

March sees the rains beginning to ease, and Victoria Falls reaches its thunderous peak flow, creating a wall of spray visible from kilometers away. The falls are at their most powerful and dramatic during this period. Bush camps remain mostly closed, but the spectacle at Victoria Falls alone makes March a worthwhile time to visit.

April marks the transition to the dry season as rains taper off and bush roads begin to dry out. Victoria Falls is at its absolute maximum flow, delivering an awe-inspiring spectacle of water and mist. Some safari camps begin reopening in South Luangwa, and the lush green landscape is still vibrant with birdlife and wildflowers.

May is the start of Zambia's excellent dry season, with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. Safari camps across South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi are now open, and vegetation begins thinning, improving wildlife visibility. Victoria Falls still carries impressive volume from the wet season, making this a superb month to combine a safari with a falls visit.

June is a prime month for safari in Zambia, with dry conditions, thinning vegetation, and wildlife concentrating near rivers and lagoons. South Luangwa's walking safaris are in full swing, offering intimate encounters with big game on foot. Nights and early mornings can be surprisingly cold, particularly in the valleys, so warm layers are essential.

July offers outstanding safari conditions with bone-dry weather, clear skies, and excellent wildlife viewing across all major parks. South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi are at their best, with large herds of elephants, buffalo, and hippos gathering along rivers. The cold mornings are bracing, but midday temperatures are comfortable and perfect for extended game drives.

August is peak safari season in Zambia, with warming temperatures and increasingly desperate wildlife activity around shrinking water sources. South Luangwa delivers extraordinary game viewing, with predator-prey interactions at their most intense. The Busanga Plains in Kafue flood and then dry, concentrating large herds of lechwe and attracting predators in impressive numbers.

September brings increasingly hot days and outstanding game viewing as vegetation dies back and water becomes critically scarce. South Luangwa is at its absolute prime, with dense concentrations of wildlife along the Luangwa River. The landscape is stark and parched, creating dramatic contrasts and making animal sightings almost guaranteed on every drive.

October is the hottest month in Zambia, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the Luangwa and Lower Zambezi valleys. The extreme heat concentrates wildlife around the last remaining water, creating some of the most dramatic game viewing of the year. Late October may bring the first rains, offering relief from the oppressive heat.

November brings the arrival of the rains, known locally as the 'emerald season,' transforming the dry landscape into a lush green paradise. The first storms are dramatic and spectacular, often occurring in the late afternoon. Many camps begin closing, but some offer excellent discounts. Birdlife explodes with the arrival of migratory species from Europe and beyond.

December is deep in the wet season, with daily downpours, high humidity, and lush vegetation obscuring wildlife. Most premium safari camps are closed, but Victoria Falls is accessible and building toward its seasonal peak. The emerald season offers beautiful scenery and exceptional birdwatching for travelers who do not mind getting wet.
