Zimbabwe Weather by Month

January is one of the wettest months, with heavy afternoon thunderstorms drenching the country daily. Roads in remote areas like Mana Pools and Hwange can become impassable, and thick vegetation limits wildlife viewing. However, the landscape is lush and green, birdlife is exceptional, and Victoria Falls is building toward its spectacular peak season.

February continues the wet season with frequent heavy rains and thick, impenetrable bush. Wildlife disperses across the parks, making sightings difficult. This is a rewarding time for birders, with over 400 species present including migrant bee-eaters and cuckoos. Victoria Falls gains volume daily, and the spray begins to tower above the gorge.

March sees the rains starting to ease while Victoria Falls approaches its thunderous peak. The falls are a truly awe-inspiring spectacle, with massive volumes of water crashing into the gorge and spray rising hundreds of meters into the air. Safari conditions remain challenging in Hwange and Mana Pools, but the falls experience alone justifies a March visit.

April is a transitional month as the rains end and the dry season begins. Victoria Falls is at its absolute peak, delivering a wall of water so powerful that spray can be seen from 50 kilometers away. The bush starts drying out, and safari conditions improve noticeably. This is an excellent value month with lower prices and fewer tourists.

May is the start of Zimbabwe's prime season, with dry weather, cooler temperatures, and excellent game viewing as vegetation thins. Victoria Falls still carries enormous volume from the wet season, making it spectacularly powerful. Hwange's waterholes begin attracting large herds of elephants, and Mana Pools camps open for the season.

June is peak winter and one of the finest months for safari in Zimbabwe. Bone-dry conditions and sparse vegetation make wildlife easy to spot, and Hwange's pumped waterholes draw massive herds of elephants, sometimes over 100 at a time. Nights are cold, dropping to 5 degrees Celsius or lower, but days are sunny, clear, and ideal for game drives.

July is the coldest month in Zimbabwe, with frosty mornings in the highveld and bitterly cold nights in safari areas. Wildlife viewing is superb, particularly at Hwange where huge elephant herds gather at waterholes. Mana Pools offers intimate walking safaris and canoe trips along the Zambezi. Victoria Falls shows a split personality: thundering on the Zambian side, with views opening on the Zimbabwean side.

August is peak safari season with warming days, clear skies, and extraordinary game viewing across all parks. Hwange's waterholes host remarkable gatherings of elephants, lions, and wild dogs. Mana Pools enters its legendary period, when elephants stand on hind legs to reach acacia pods and painted wolves den along the floodplain. This is Zimbabwe at its wildlife-viewing best.

September brings rising heat and outstanding game viewing as wildlife crowds around the last remaining water sources. Mana Pools is at its legendary peak, with elephants, buffalo, and lions creating unforgettable encounters on the Zambezi floodplain. Victoria Falls water levels drop enough to reveal the stunning rock face and allow swimming in Devil's Pool on the Zambian side.

October is the hottest month in Zimbabwe, with temperatures in the Zambezi Valley regularly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The searing heat concentrates wildlife around water in dense, dramatic gatherings that deliver extraordinary game viewing. Late October may bring the first rains, offering spectacular thunderstorm skies. Victoria Falls is at its lowest, revealing the full rock face.

November ushers in the wet season with the first significant rains, cooling the air and transforming the scorched landscape into green. The rains arrive in dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly, leaving golden light for photography. Some safari camps close for the season, but Hwange and Victoria Falls remain accessible and offer excellent value with fewer visitors.

December is deep in the wet season, with daily rains greening the landscape and swelling rivers across the country. Many bush camps close, but Victoria Falls and established lodges in Hwange remain open. The holiday period brings visiting Zimbabweans and regional tourists, adding a festive atmosphere. Birding is excellent, with breeding plumage displays and migrant species everywhere.
