The Story of Craig

Craig was born around 1972 in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and has spent his entire life roaming the Amboseli ecosystem. As a young elephant, he was one of many, but as he aged and his tusks continued to grow to extraordinary lengths, he became something truly special.

Big tuskers like Craig are increasingly rare. It's estimated that fewer than 25 elephants with tusks touching the ground remain in all of Africa. These genetic giants were once common, but decades of ivory poaching have selectively removed elephants with large tusks from the gene pool, making each survivor invaluable.

Craig has been the subject of extensive research and protection efforts. The Big Life Foundation and Kenya Wildlife Service have worked together to provide him with round-the-clock protection. Rangers monitor his movements constantly, ensuring he stays safe from poachers who would prize his massive ivory.

Despite his fame, Craig remains wild and free. He wanders across the Amboseli landscape, often photographed against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro. His calm demeanor around safari vehicles has allowed countless visitors to witness the majesty of a true giant.
