Rwanda Weather by Month

January is part of Rwanda's short dry season, offering pleasant conditions for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Kigali enjoys warm days with occasional light showers, while the highland volcanoes region is cooler with misty mornings. The relatively dry trails make this one of the better months for primate encounters.

February remains relatively dry in Rwanda, though light rains become more frequent toward the end of the month as the wet season approaches. Gorilla trekking conditions are still favorable, and the lush vegetation provides a stunning backdrop for photography. Nyungwe Forest is particularly beautiful, with chimpanzees and colobus monkeys active in the canopy.

March brings the onset of the long rainy season, with frequent afternoon downpours and overcast skies becoming the norm. Gorilla trekking is more challenging as volcanic slopes become slippery, but the reduced tourist numbers mean a more personal experience with habituated gorilla families. The countryside turns a deep emerald green, earning Rwanda its reputation as the land of a thousand hills.

April is the wettest month in Rwanda, with heavy, sustained rainfall that can make highland trails extremely difficult. Commemorations of the 1994 genocide take place throughout the month, lending a somber but important cultural dimension to any visit. Despite the rain, gorilla trekking continues, and permit availability is at its highest.

May sees the long rains beginning to subside, though showers remain common, especially in the highlands and around Nyungwe Forest. The landscape is at peak lushness, and waterfalls throughout the country are at their most impressive. This shoulder period offers lower prices and fewer tourists at gorilla trekking sites.

June heralds the beginning of Rwanda's long dry season, with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures across the country. This is prime gorilla trekking season, with drier trails and excellent visibility on the volcanic slopes. Nyungwe Forest's canopy walkway offers breathtaking views above the mist-draped treetops on clear mornings.

July is one of the driest and most popular months for visiting Rwanda. Conditions are ideal for gorilla trekking, with firm trails and clear mountain views. Akagera National Park in the east offers increasingly good savanna safari experiences with the Big Five. Book gorilla permits and accommodations well in advance for this peak period.

August continues the dry season with warm, sunny days and cool highland nights, making it another superb month for gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing. International tourist numbers peak during this summer holiday period, so early booking is essential. The clear skies offer stunning views of the Virunga volcano chain from multiple vantage points.

September is the final month of the long dry season, with conditions remaining largely favorable for outdoor activities. Light showers may return toward the end of the month, but most days are sunny and pleasant. This is a wonderful time to combine gorilla trekking with a visit to Akagera or a relaxing stay on the shores of Lake Kivu.

October brings the short rainy season to Rwanda, with afternoon showers becoming a daily occurrence. Gorilla trekking is still possible and rewarding, but trails in Volcanoes National Park can be muddy and require greater physical effort. The upside is fewer tourists and better availability of permits and lodges at reduced rates.

November is one of Rwanda's wetter months, with regular and sometimes heavy rainfall throughout the country. The volcanoes region is often shrouded in mist and cloud, which can limit views but creates a mystical atmosphere for gorilla encounters. Nyungwe Forest is exceptionally lush, and birdlife is prolific as migratory species arrive.

December marks the beginning of the short dry season, with rainfall decreasing as the month progresses. The festive period draws international visitors, making this a busy time for gorilla trekking and Akagera safaris. Kigali comes alive with holiday celebrations, and the improving weather makes this a great time for multi-destination itineraries across Rwanda.
